Sokolow, Nahum
(1859-1936)
   Polish Zionist leader. He was born in Wyszogrod, near Plock, Poland. He joined the editorial board of the journal Ha-Tzephirah in Warsaw in 1884, later becoming its manager. From 1905 to 1909 he served as secretary of the World Zionist Organization; during this period he edited the organization's journal Die Welt and also founded its Hebrew weekly Ha-Olam. At the outbreak of World War I he moved from Berlin to London, where he became involved in the negoti-ations concerning the Balfour Declaration. After the war he presided over the Comite des Delegations Juives during the Versailles peace conference in 1919. He was chairman of the executive of the Zionist Organization (1921-31), and president of the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency. His writings include a study entitled History of Zionism.
